I've got a new gadget! It's an Owl Smart Meter and I am going through an interesting exercise of monitoring our energy consumption.
I researched the meter purchase extensively and selected the Owl model with I've added to The Gadgets and Gizmos Shop. http://www.eilidhmilnes.com/JayRecommends
It was £28.50 plus postage.
Easy to install and now I am reading the instructions to fine tune the meter to allow for our different tariffs. We have Economy and well as Standard rate.
Will post again once I've more accurate facts and figures to share.

Over a year ago, I bought myself a great simple gadget that saves energy and effort. With power saving sockets you can simply switch off multiple electrical appliances completely without them going into standby mode.

The remote is so effective that I can operate it through the floor from my bedroom!  Handy for all sorts of reasons...

When you plug in your electrical appliances (such as TVs, DVD players) into a remote controlled plug socket, they can all be completely switched off with neat pocket sized remote control - no excess electricity wasted.

It also makes switching off awkward plug-sockets - do you have one of those -located behind the TV like mine by any chance - an easy one click task.

Jay should add these to his Gadgets and Gizmos store....

Today's Low Carbon Webinar raised some great points. Here a few I recall:
  • Have a Green Ambassador in your company
  • Look to create behavioural change to unite home and work
  • Consider photo voltaics to save and generate power
  • Monitor consumption with smart meters then with publish the results and keep track of usage
  • Have green screen messages
  • Green tips of the week
  • Green employee of the week
  • Green desk of the day
  • Consider an amnesty to allow staff to return over-stocked items
Great contributions! Thanks all!

Email in from Low Carbon Exchange...
Why not join us in Birmingham?
Dear Eilidh

Low Carbon Best Practice Exchange
Wednesday 10 March 2010, National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham

As you'll no doubt appreciate, the value of this type of networking event is greatly enhanced if everyone provides brief information about their organisation, role and interests.

So I would be very grateful if you would now just take a few minutes to email me a brief profile including:

1. Brief details of your particular interests and challenges that you face in minimising carbon emissions.
2. Brief details of any experience that you have in reducing carbon emissions, that you would be willing to share informally with others at the Exchange.

We will be back in touch two weeks before the event to invite you to go online to plan your personal agenda for the day. This agenda planning process simply involves selecting the discussion groups and presentations that you wish to attend and submitting (and responding to) requests to meet with other participants at the forum.

Finally, we appreciate that this type of interactive networking event will be a new experience for many participants. So if you would like to discuss any aspect of the Low Carbon Best Practice Exchange, please send me an email and I will give you a call.

Regards

Thank you to the people who attended my discussion group.
And special thanks to Nigel Hursthouse of Marks and Spencer for his input. For me, his contribution was one of the best bits of the day.

I promised to connect the delegates at my table and also to point them to the Marks and Spencer  plan. Here are the links Nigel suggests:
